Jesus Dies on the Cross.
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 while the sun’s light failed, and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last. 47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, “Certainly this man was innocent.” 48 And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. 49 But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things.

Jesus Speaks to His Mother and Disciple.
25b Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

My friend Desirée asked me to consider a moment that reflected the relationship between mother and child — more specifically Mary seeing her child. I don't know much about Bible stuff, but what Des spoke about sent my mind to a photo I took when I felt like I could see a perspective shift happen in my wife's eyes in real time. I saw a person I hadn't known before. In one moment, the weight of the unknown had been replaced with the warmth of clarity.
